Almond Joy Granola

Instructions

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Stir together oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in large bowl; set aside.

2. Combine corn syrup, oil and vanilla in small bowl. Pour over oats mixture, stirring until oats are thoroughly coated.

3. Remove wrappers from candy bars; cut each bar into 4 pieces. Place 1/2 cup candy bar pieces in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at MEDIUM (50%) 30 seconds; stir. If necessary, microwave at MEDIUM an additional 10 seconds at a time, stirring after each heating, until chocolate is melted and mixture is blended when stirred.

4. Stir melted candy into oats mixture, blending thoroughly. Spread mixture in ungreased 15-1/2 x 10-1/2 x 1-1/2-inch jelly-roll pan. Bake 15 minutes; stir in almonds and coconut. Bake an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until mixture is light golden brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack, stirring mixture occasionally. Stir in remaining candy bar pieces. Store in cool, dry place for up to one month. Makes about 5-1/2 cups granola.

We placed matching bulk orders for these Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, and we quickly discovered upon opening some of the individual bars that most were old, stale, and borderline rotten, with discoloration on the surface and a foul taste. These are clearly NOT fresh products.

Okay. The title for this review is from the old Almond Joy/Mounds jingle. Truth is, I like both these candy bars equally well. And as far as I can tell, the taste hasn't changed since I was a youth several decades ago. The outer chocolate shell consists of pretty good chocolate, not gourmet chocolate, of course, but very good for a candy bar. And the moist coconut filling is tasty, sweet, and smooth. Plus, the whole almonds are always fresh. There have been times I've come across a candy bar with stale almonds, but never with Almond Joy. This is a high quality product.

I have loved almond joys since I was a little bitty bit. Unfortunately, I have to stop eating them. I don't know if my almond joys are really old or if this ingredient list is old, but the list I am looking at contains a lot of things not on this list. Maybe it's the vanillin or maybe it's the PGPR, but something about them makes me feel awful every time I eat them now.

Bummer. I wish Peter Paul would use real ingredients instead of this petro stuff so I can go back to eating them.

So how do you keep straight which is the Almond Joy and which is the Mounds? Simple. Almond Joys are the ones that have the almonds right beneath the chocolate coating. Otherwise these two candy bars are pretty much the same. Anyhow, they're both great bars. The chocolate coating isn't gourmet chocolate, but it's very good for a candy bar. And the moist coconut filling is tasty, sweet, and smooth. The whole almonds are always fresh. These bars are just as I remember them when I was a kid a half century ago.

Candy was shipped by mail, therefore I would assume that was the reason for them too have melted and then stick to the wrapper and cardboard tray that holds the candy bars. Other suppliers use FedEx or UPS which is more climate controlled, and most suppliers use cooling bags during the summer months.
